Mitchell Todyana

Children With Identity

Mitchell is a happy girl today because she finally has a birth certificate. She now has an official identity, knows who her relatives are and is able to register for school, apply for a national identity card, a passport and other government benefits.

A birth certificate costs $25 in Zimbabwe, a sum out of reach for most struggling families. Moreover, obtaining vital documents is complicated and most often involves several trips to the offices of the Registrar General. Bopoma Villages trains volunteers to assist families to obtain birth certificates for orphaned children who otherwise have little hope of ever getting one.

The headman of Mitchell’s village had this to say, "If all the caregivers in Banga Village had a heart like Bopoma Villages, Banga Village could be a living testimony of children with identity."
